Over the years it has become more and more accepted that Pride™ events have no longer become the event they were set up for. There is a constant battle of remembering the real reasons why we are still going to these events. They have mainly been taken over by corporate sponsors and do not fit into half of their demographic because they are ticketed festivals and not free protests.
Oh shit, not fucking again. I hear you cry. Nah. Surprisingly this isn’t a call out post per se but an actual reflection of our current state of affairs within the LGBT community. OK, I lied… STONEWALL WHAT THE ACTUAL JESUS FUCKING FUCK ARE YOU PLAYING AT RIGHT NOW. Well your reputation of picking up corporate sponsorship has been public for ages now, I thought we stopped throwing trans women under the fucking bus after you got called out for that bullshit many years ago.
The scene is set. Terfs yet again start bullshit under the disguise of debating gender. Pro tip – protected characteristics are not a debate platform. There was a protest (and rightly so) to oppose this bullshit situation. Along comes this 60 year old grandma who plays victim and claims she’s been violently assaulted by a trans women and looks out for justice… Justice happened in the form of her own friends video. Turns out this nice little Grandma baited protesters, and put a woman in a headlock trying to choke her, and got hit as an act of self defence. She then starts bosting all over the internet about how she should have done worse to the woman. I will give you three guesses where stonewall went with this.
They published a response condemning violence used by protesters. That’s right, stonewall, the thing that was set up because of protestors, the thing that was set up because of affirmative action done by trans women..sided with the TERFS without looking at the evidence. Has the fear of loosing money from corporate sponsorship deals become more fucking important than the basic human rights of women that formed the basis of their own fucking charity?! This is not the first time this has happened.
LGBT projects are often massively underfunded and getting money to support clients is a hard task. However because of cut backs, more corporations have stepped in and funded charities, and in return asked for a cleaner, more wholesome image that their corporation doesn’t get tainted with. This means that once sane sex marriage came in, all us little gays needed to do is shut the fuck up and pretend that everything is OK. Charities are pretty much told to turn our backs on political undertones and to keep their hands clean to provide a family atmosphere. So this means for stonewall that they have to rewrite their own history, deny the fact they were founded by The New York mafia (google, it’s actually really cool history) and deny the fact that it was their women that threw the first bricks in response to police brutality.
This is happening more and more. There are now two factions in the LGBT community. Those who think the war is over, and those who know it isn’t. The ones who are still fighting for marriage equality, an adequate gender recognition provision, the abolition of homophobia, trans people not getting murdered, a medical system that isn’t oppressive to the LGBT community, ect, ect. These people who are fighting for this are thrown under the bus on the regular because it just doesn’t look pretty. Stonewall has thrown us all under the bus by this action. They have admitted that they don’t fight for us anymore, even when we are violently assaulted.
I respect that a business wants to keep its nose clean. But when it’s at the cost of the people they are set up to protect, there is a problem….. And we need to resolve it
