***This maybe a bit of a tearful post so please do not read it if you are unable to cope with the feelings of loss right now***
Earlier this year I officially saw the one moment that broke me emotionally when it came to The Simpsons. Even when I think about this one moment I will start crying because it brings up a level of pain, that no one can truly express unless they have lost someone close in their life.
And here it is.
The scene was made because it was the last recorded voice clip that Marcia Wallace recorded before she lost her battle with cancer. The last tango was one thing, and throughout the episode (Spoiler if you haven’t seen it) you are lead to a conclusion from the start that Ned was taking Edna to tango, because she had to deal with the problems that were faced with Ned’s children.
In the very last scene it pans out to Edna and Ned having their tango session, and enjoying themselves out, only for it to pan out further.
What was in fact going on was that Ned was dreaming about it. And then it hits you, when he mentions the tango session earlier in the episode, he’s talking about spending time grieving over his second wife, he wasn’t actually with her physically. The arm band he wears is a sign of mourning, and that what he’s trying to do is cope with the fact he has lost her. And then he breaks his dream like state but uttering these heart breaking words, that fans of the show, and people who have lost someone would truly understand
I sure do miss that laugh
At this point Nelson pops in, laughs and then breaks and replies to Ned softly “I miss her too!”
And this is where I sobbed like I had never sobbed before. This is where I’m crying writing this post because I have felt that pain, like so many others.
I have woken up from dreams that my Nan has been in, and woken up to the reality that she hasn’t been there. I have been shut in my own head space longing to hear friends voices (and called their mobiles, just to hear there personalised answer phone), knowing I would never hear them again. This episode brought all of that back. That gut wrenching agony of loss, that keeps you up at three o’clock in the morning writing a post about The Simpsons because its the closest thing you can relate it to.
When Marcia died, it broke so many fans hearts, and reminded them of their own personal loss. She will however live on in peoples memory via the wonderful world of cartoons. Her legacy will live on many years after The Simpsons has ended, and her death will remind us, just how human we all are.
